• Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment

  Treating and diagnosing snoring In order to diagnose and effectively treat your snoring and sleep apnea in Ft Lauderdale, FL, Dr. Sultan will first evaluate your medical and snoring history and sleeping habits. He will also provide you with a 3-Dimensional airway analysis and perform a fiber optic exam of your breathing passages. In some cases, Dr. Sultan may require additional studies, such as a sleep study or polysomnogram, in order to make a thorough diagnosis. Following your exam and a review of your records, Dr. Sultan will present you with a summary of his findings, and then make recommendations for your treatment.

• Dental Implants

  Dental implants are tooth root replacements made from titanium which are inserted into the jawbone, providing a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Once a dental implant is surgically placed into the jawbone, the bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. After a period of healing (OSSEOINTEGRATION), small attachments (ABUTMENTS) are then screwed to the implant. These protrude through the gums, providing the foundation for placement of replacement teeth, bridges, or dentures. Dental implants, for example, with the “All-On-4” technique in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, or any other technique, help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. Patients who have lost teeth regain the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that they can smile with confidence. So it’s no wonder that more and more patients are turning to dental implants as a better alternative to dentures and dental bridges. Studies have shown that the long term success rates for dental implants exceed those for root canals, crowns, and bridges. In fact, dentists and insurance companies have both agreed that placement of a dental implant is now the standard of care for replacement of a tooth.

• Bone Grafting

  Due to a variety of conditions (e.g. trauma, missing teeth, infection, tumor removal) the bones of the face lack sufficient quantity and quality to support proper facial contours, or support for placement of dental implants. Over time, aging, osteoporosis and stress can also add to bone loss. Bone can be replaced by a variety of techniques, depending on the type of deficit involved, and future plans to restore functionality and esthetic appearance.

• TMJ Surgery & Replacement

  TMD, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a term which covers a wide range of painful oral and facial symptoms involving the jaw joint (TMJ) and the surrounding facial muscles. Symptoms may include pain in front of the ear, joint noises, headache, limited mouth opening, jaw locking, and change in bite. TMD, as it progresses, can cause symptoms affecting one’s daily quality of life. Fortunately, at the Sultan Center for Oral Facial Surgery in Ft Lauderdale, Dr. Sultan can provide both non-surgical and surgical options to treat this condition. Many times TMD can involve a combination of a joint disorder, muscle spasm and clenching, and stress. Skeletal jaw relationships and tooth relationship (occlusion) also plays a role. When diagnosed and treated properly, the majority of patients will obtain relief from non-surgical and REVERSIBLE modalities. These include: Limitation of mouth opening Diet modification Moist heat Medications (anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants) Stress management Bite-guard (custom) If a bite-guard, or othotic appliance is recommended, it should be custom, made out of hard acrylic and allow your jaw to be supported and move freely. When these non-invasive treatments fail to relieve the symptoms of TMD, and there is documented pathology in the TMJ itself, surgery should be considered.

• Orthognathic Surgery

  Orthognathic means “straight” jaws. Orthognathic surgery is a procedure done to correct tooth position as well as correct jaw alignment. The goals of orthognathic surgery are to help correct problems associated with chewing, speech and breathing, will improving patients’ appearance by balancing the jaw structures.

• Skeletal Anchorage Surgery

  Historically, closure of a skeletal open bite (apertognathia) often required a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery to achieve correction of the occlusion and esthetic improvement. When traditional jaw surgery is not an option, the use of titanium plates and screws along with orthodontics can consistently and predictably reposition and intrude posterior teeth for stable dental and skeletal correction.

• Jaw Reconstruction

  Advanced bone loss of the upper and lower jaws require special techniques for reconstruction. Advanced bone loss leads to facial changes such as a sunken-in appearance of the lower lip, a thinning of the lips, an increase in the number and depth of wrinkles about the mouth and sagging of the chin. They normally involve a combination of extensive bone grafting and implant placement to achieve a stable foundation for tooth replacement. Special reconstructive techniques, normally using a combination of extensive bone grafting in combination with implant placement is successful. A combination of bone grafting, to rebuild bone volume, and dental implant placement is necessary to not only provide support of the dentition, but also reconstruct the soft tissues that reduce the appearance of facial aging.

• Impacted Wisdom Teeth

  Removal of a tooth is one of the most common procedures performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Reasons for tooth removal may include : Advanced tooth decay Severe periodontal disease Teeth involved with cysts/tumors Impaction (inability to erupt)

• Chin, Cheek & Facial Implants

  Dr. Sultan prefers the use of implants manufactured from porous plastic material, or a combination of silicone coated with plastic. These materials never resorb, or dissolve, have less risk of infection, and do not cause scar tissue capsules around them, which can result in a contour irregularity. These implants are placed either through small incisions in the mouth, or from inconspicuous incisions well hidden on the face. Deep sedation or general anesthesia is preferred for patient comfort, delivered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. The majority of these procedures can be performed in our sate of the art hospital style outpatient facility. The most common areas for correction with facial implants are: -Chin -Cheeks -Lower jaw (mandible) -Para-nasal (around the nasal base) -Lower rim of the eye socket (infraorbital rim) Midface suspension sutures (Midface lift) Removal of fat from beneath the jaw (lipectomy/liposuction)

• Facial Injuries

  Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, because of their training, are uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat all injuries of the face, mouth and jaws. Dr. Sultan has extensive experience in this area. He currently serves as one of the main consultants at both Broward General Medical Center and Holy Cross Hospital. Treatment of the trauma patient is a multidisciplinary approach and Dr. Sultan has served on numerous trauma care teams at Level 1 trauma centers. Fifty years ago, a handful of Swiss surgeons joined together to champion revolutionary techniques of plating the facial bones to facilitate bone healing with unheard of results. The group expanded the practices and philosophies of their techniques all over the world. There are many causes for facial injury: -Altercation -Fall -Motor vehicle accident -Sports related -Gunshot

• Cysts & Tumors

  It is important for all patients to have a routine evaluation for signs of changes and or growths within the oral cavity. Dr. Sultan and his colleagues recommend those at high risk for oral cancer, namely smokers, drinkers, users of chewing tobacco perform a self evaluation monthly. When detected in the early stages, oral cancer may be more easily treated. Warning Signs of Oral Cancer: -Reddish patches or whitish patches in the mouth -A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily -A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth -Chronic sore throat or hoarseness -Difficulty in chewing or swallowing -These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck. Pain does not always occur with pathology and, curiously, is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.

• Lesion Removal

  We all want to look younger, and have beautiful skin. Thus, it is important for both men and women to utilize a regular skin care program. However, the skin usually is the first sign of aging, especially in the Florida sun! With the use of radiowave technology, blemishes, moles, and other skin irregularities can be removed, resulting in smoother, more attractive skin. The types of skin lesion that can be treated include: -Age spots -Moles/raised lesions -Skin tags -Small red veins (telangectasias) -Warts -Sun damaged skin -Skin surface irregularities Radiowave technology is a simple but effective tool in treating these problems. The use of high energy radiowaves allow relatively bloodless surgery with rapid healing using cosmetic enhancing incisions. In many cases, no sutures are needed. Most treatment is performed in our office based surgery facility using a local anesthetic. Most treatments take one visit to complete. Of course, any suspicious looking areas will be biopsies after they are removed.
